EVL Guild 1 Year Anniversary!
We made it! Wow… 2016 was quite a year wasn’t it? It was this time last year that a small, but dedicated, group of 7 people decided enough tyranny was enough and we headed down our own path to form the guild Every Virtue is Lasting <EVL>. It was not an easy decision to leave our friends and guildmates in the BMC behind for a better gaming experience, and when we made the decision we had no idea how many would follow us on our journey. Now that we stand a full year stronger and our ranks have swelled (and diminished at times) I thought it would be nice to recap a little of where we came from as a guild and what we have accomplished in 2016 together.
First off, I want to say thank you for believing in us and for being great guildmates and friends who are kind to each other, involved in the community, and helpful to new players. Friendship, Community, and Helpfulness are some of the pillars we built this guild upon because they were things we were not getting from our previous guild the Britanian Mining Company (BMC), and this was mostly due to the 1 dimensional leader of that guild. I won’t get into specifics, but it was no fun playing the game anymore under the circumstances. The original 7 that got together and decided to create EVL were Onyx, Jade, Brickbat, Ashmaul, Kendric Darrow, Jar Laxle, and myself Sheamus McGuinness.
We were not experienced guild masters, but decided to create a “Council of Elders” that made decisions and ran the guild with Onyx being our Guild Leader in title & ultimately our “tie-breaker”. Running a large guild is hard! We found that out quickly as many of our former BMC guildmates decided to follow the path we chose as well. With the large influx of friends coming over we agreed to not “actively recruit” any members from the BMC, but if they wanted to join EVL of their own will we would welcome our old friends with open arms.
Now a month or two into a new year and a new guild with over a hundred in our ranks we quickly grabbed the attention of the community and got to work on putting events together, setting up relationships with other guilds, helping new players, and supporting Portalarium in their pre-persistence efforts.
In February 2016 we created our most successful and longest running event The Virtue League. Meant to be a PVP event that catered to avatars that are just getting their feet wet in PVP as well as the top ranking fighters, The Virtue League has become the most popular weekly event and has run for 4 straight seasons and now about to start its 5th. Our very own Kendric Darrow was the first champion of Virtue League and many other great fighters have followed his path. This same month also saw EVL pick up where Port left off by creating our own player-run “Hat Quest”, where EVL tour guides lead you through each releases new content and then gave you a crafted hat at the end. Everyone LOVED the bucket helm when it released!
February also saw our very first EVL Fashion Show curated by our dearly departed Lacy. The event was a great success and has continued quarterly with the talented (and newly appointed Elder) Caree Death. The costumes that people can put together with such limited resources is really cool to watch and with participation from tons of guilds in game both on stage and as our official judges.
In March we stepped it up yet again with Sheamus’s creation of THE GAUNTLET which is a cross between American Ninja Warrior and American Gladiators. A single avatar runs an obstacle course while EVL Gladiators at each location try to slow them down with a variety of spells. While THE GAUNTLET has been on hiatus since Persistence, it will be making a come back here in the first quarter of 2017!
Of course what March could be complete without a party to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! We decorated a great lot in Owls Head and we even had a hunt for Sheamus’s Pot-o-Gold hidden in town.
In Release 29 we were honored in multiple ways with the opportunity to host the traditional Firelotus Release Party in our guild capital city of Virtue Oasis. The same weekend the Devs at Portalarium asked us to host a PVP event in our PVP town of Chaos Caverns where Avatars got to “Duel with the Devs”. With promises of crafted gear and game-wide glory for any that could kill Darkstarr, Atos, or Lord British we had an overwhelming response and hundreds of Avatars flocked to the event pretty much crashing the zone many times over. While it was complete Chaos in the Caverns, hehe, everyone had fun and many of us from EVL scored a killing blow on a Dev including 2 kills for myself (even though LB stole my pants)! All in all, it was an honor to host such an event, and nothing like it has taken place since in game.
More and more the community recognized us as a leader in the game and we continued to collaborate on more events like the SotA Dating Game we did with the Phoenix Republic. It was around this time that our good friend and Council Elder Kendric Darrow took leave from the game. For those that knew him, you know how amazing he was, and or those that came too late we hope that he returns one day and you can find out for yourself. While this was quite the blow to us, we steamed ahead and stayed the course.
It was during the 2016 Summer Telethon part 1 that Every Virtue is Lasting was awarded the highest award in the game for a guild as we were presented with our official Royal Warrant by Lord British himself (aka Richard Garriott) for our work in the community with events and helping out new players. This was a great honor for our guild and it really speaks to the quality of our members and their willingness to work together and always help those in need.
Council Elder Sheamus McGuinness accepted the Royal Warrant on behalf of everyone at EVL, watch the video below to see the whole presentation as well as when the devs “flew over” our Brittany advertisement lot and talked about it at length!
EVL went into Persistence with a ton of momentum, and we continued to do what we had done all year and kicked it off with fun things like our EVL Emote Swap.
It was in October that we had our very first EVL Guild Meetup which was held in Austin, TX on October 7-9, 2016. This was so much damn fun (more then I expected for meeting a bunch of gamers that I had never met before) and we had about 20 members in attendance. We got to hang out at Portalarium studios all weekend, chat with all the devs, drink, eat, drink some more and we even played a great game of Pathfinder in the hotel lobby! Lots more details from this event are in this post.
While the “fun high” from the Meetup lasted quite some time it was shortly after this that we received the terrible news that our beloved Lacey had finally succumbed to her invasive cancer. She was a fighter and one of the most kind individuals I have met in this game. She was always ready to lend a hand or an ear, despite her battle with cancer, and she certainly holds a very special place in our hearts. Her SotA memory and legacy will be carried on by us here at EVL for as long as we remain a guild in this game.
With the leaving of a dozen or so guildmates around this same time we decided to appoint new Council Elders to fill in the gaps left by Kendric Darrow and Jar Laxle. We welcomed new Council Elders Caree Death, Smoken, Xog, and Wintermute of Cof to our ranks and they have all stepped up the challenge and have been a great help to get back to a smoothly running guild of friends.
This was not the best way to lead into the end of a crazy year, and although we have had many trials and tribulations as a guild I truly believe that now, here in the new year, we are poised to kick some ass with a leaner and more focused group of guildmembers and Council Elders. Once again, I thank you for your time, efforts, making meetings, helping out, and generally being cool people.
Happy 1 year anniversary Every Virtue is Lasting!
– Sheamus McGuinness, Council Elder of EVL
